PUBG: Black Budget is cancelled — Krafton ends the extraction shooter after two closed alphas

Key points

  • PUBG Studios announced on October 1, 2026, that it has ended development of PUBG: Black Budget, in a post on the game's Steam page.
  • PUBG: Black Budget ran two closed alpha tests on Steam: one in December 2025 and a second from June 26 to June 29, 2026.
  • PUBG Studios says PUBG: Black Budget's direction “would not allow us to deliver an experience players could enjoy over the long term.”
  • PUBG: Black Budget was never released or sold; Steam still listed it on October 2, 2026, with a release date of “To be announced.”

PUBG: Black Budget is cancelled. PUBG Studios said on October 1, 2026, that it has ended development of the PC extraction shooter, in a “Development Update” posted to the game’s Steam page. The game was published by Krafton, never went on sale, and had been played only in closed alpha tests.

The announcement is four sentences long. “After reviewing the project’s development status and future direction, we concluded that its current direction would not allow us to deliver an experience players could enjoy over the long term,” it reads. “We have therefore made the difficult decision to end development of PUBG: Black Budget.”

Ten months, from first test to last post

The game’s own Steam feed gives the whole public life of the project. PUBG Studios announced a closed alpha on November 21, 2025. That test opened on December 12 and was wrapped up in a post titled “The End of Closed Alpha” on December 22.

A second closed alpha followed in June 2026. It went live on June 26, and a same-day post said the studio was granting additional access “thanks to the incredible interest and support.” It ended on June 29. The next announcement on the feed, three months later, is the cancellation.

That sequence is the part worth noticing. The last thing PUBG Studios said about demand was that it was letting more players in. The statement that ends the game does not mention player numbers at all; it is about direction, and about whether the game could hold people “over the long term.”

What the statement covers, and what it leaves out

It thanks “everyone who took the time to participate in our Closed Alpha tests and share their feedback,” and says the studio “will carry what we learned from development and testing into future projects.”

It does not say what happens to the team that built the game, whether any of its systems move into PUBG: Battlegrounds, or when the Steam page comes down. When we checked on October 2, the store listing was still up, with KRAFTON as publisher and a release date of “To be announced.” There was no price, because the game was never sold.

What to watch

Two things will show how final this is. The first is the Steam page: a listing that stays up invites wishlists for a game that will not ship. The second is where the work goes. “Future projects” is the only forward-looking phrase in the post, and PUBG Studios has not named one. We will update this story if either changes.
