# Planet Zoo 2 consensus: critics love the animals, but PC Gamer's 60 says the micromanagement bites

> Reviews for Frontier's zoo sequel landed October 13. Most critics call it a thriving, bigger and better follow-up, praising the animals, aquariums and aviaries. PC Gamer's 60 and console reviews push back on fiddly micromanagement and a dense UI. Japan has no review and LatAm is thin. This is a consensus review: we did not play it.

## Key points

- Planet Zoo 2, developed and published by Frontier Developments, launched October 13, 2026, at 11:00 ART on PC (Steam, Epic), PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
- On October 14 at ~09:09 ART, Metacritic showed 85 on PC from 15 reviews and OpenCritic showed an 84 Top Critic Average with 90% recommending, from 10 reviews.
- Named scores cluster from 80 to 95: Destructoid 95, IGN 9/10, Push Square 9/10, GameSpew 9/10, IGN Benelux 90, GameStar 84 and Metro 8/10.
- PC Gamer's 60 is the outlier: its review says the animals are superstars but don't make up for fiddly, frustrating micromanagement.
- No Japanese review was found. In LatAm, Pizza Fria (Brazil) gave 8.1 and Atomix (Mexico) recommends it without a numeric score.

[IGN](https://www.ign.com/articles/planet-zoo-2-review) gave *Planet Zoo 2* a **9/10** and called it a "vibrant and thriving sequel." [PC Gamer](https://www.pcgamer.com/games/sim/planet-zoo-2-review/) gave it **60** and said its "animals are superstars, but they don't quite make up for the fiddly, frustrating micromanagement." Both reviews admire the same animals. What they disagree on is whether running the zoo around them is the fun or the chore.

*Planet Zoo 2* is developed and published by Frontier Developments. It launched on **Tuesday, October 13, at 11:00 ART** on PC (Steam and Epic), PS5 and Xbox Series X|S ([our launch-times story](https://playobservatory.com/news/planet-zoo-2-launch-times-october-13-2026/) has every time zone). The Standard Edition is **$49.99** on [Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/3219030/) in the US and **US$22.99** on Steam Argentina before taxes (as of October 14). Review embargoes lifted around 09:00 ART on launch day.

## How we scored it

This is a **consensus review**. Play Observatory did **not** play *Planet Zoo 2*. We read named published reviews from the US, Europe, Latin America and Australia, used Metacritic and OpenCritic only as **context**, and applied our own criteria: consensus shape, outliers, platform variance, day-0 caveats and who it's for.

When we read the aggregators on Wednesday, October 14, at **09:09 ART**, [Metacritic](https://www.metacritic.com/game/planet-zoo-2/critic-reviews/?platform=pc) showed **85 on PC (15 critic reviews)**. [OpenCritic](https://opencritic.com/game/20786/planet-zoo-2) showed a Top Critic Average of **84**, with **90%** of critics recommending it (**10 reviews**). Console samples were too small for a firm average, and counts were still climbing.

The **8** is our judgment. It sits a little under the aggregators because the dense interface and the day-0 bug reports are the two things a buyer can't skip, and because two of the four regions we look for are empty or thin.

## Where critics agree

The animals carry the game in nearly every review. [Destructoid](https://www.destructoid.com/reviews/planet-zoo-2-review/) (**95**) says each species feels distinct and describes losing hours just watching them. [Insider Gaming](https://insider-gaming.com/reviews/planet-zoo-2-review-a-new-high-bar-set-for-simulation-games/) (**10/10**) says it "raises the bar for the simulation genre." [DualShockers](https://www.dualshockers.com/planet-zoo-2-review/) (**9/10**) calls it a "stupendous upgrade," and [Cultured Vultures](https://culturedvultures.com/planet-zoo-2-pc-review/) (**90**) says it "isn't a revolution" but improves on the original in every way.

Aquariums and aviaries are the most-cited new additions. [IGN Benelux](https://nl.ign.com/planet-zoo-2/167759/review-planet-zoo-2) (**90**) says they make it the "ultimate" zoo game, and [Digitec Magazine](https://www.digitec.ch/de/page/endlich-mein-eigenes-aquarium-bauen-bei-planet-zoo-2-44072) (Switzerland, **4/5**) says rewilding and aquariums breathe fresh life into it. In the UK, [GameSpew](https://www.gamespew.com/2026/10/planet-zoo-2-review/) (**9/10**) calls it "Frontier's biggest and best game yet." IGN adds that the economy is genuinely challenging, and [AltChar](https://www.altchar.com/reviews/planet-zoo-2-review-a-better-zoo-missing-some-old-friends-aQgna1j2K4sr) (**9/10**) praises the quality-of-life upgrades over the first game.

## Where they split

The shape is a high, tight cluster, with most named scores between 80 and 95, and a real low tail. The split isn't about the animals. It's about the interface around them.

- **Micromanagement.** PC Gamer's Rick Lane finds habitat and staff management fiddly enough to drag the whole game down. Nobody else goes that far, but the theme recurs: [Metro](https://metro.co.uk/2026/10/13/planet-zoo-2-review-virtual-animal-welfare-29704672/) (**8/10**) says enclosure setup is still fiddly and takes many hours to get comfortable with, and [GRYOnline](https://www.gry-online.pl/recenzje/recenzja-planet-zoo-2-to-swietna-strategia-dla-perfekcjonistow/r2107) (Poland, **8.5**) says it's great for perfectionists but may overwhelm players who want a relaxed animal-watching game.
- **Console controls.** [Push Square](https://www.pushsquare.com/reviews/ps5/planet-zoo-2) (**9/10**, PS5) loves it but warns of a fiddly gamepad and busy UI. [Xbox Achievements](https://www.xboxachievements.com/game/planet-zoo-2/review/) (**70%**) calls the console UI fussy, though engrossing once learned. DualShockers says it may overwhelm newcomers even with the story mode.
- **Depth and roster.** IGN says the Wildlife Reserves "could be a lot richer." AltChar, IGN Benelux and Destructoid note some fan-favourite animals from the first game are missing. [PCMGAMES](https://www.pcmgames.com/analisis-de-planet-zoo-2/) (Spain, recommended) flags future paid DLC as the main long-term risk.

## Day-0 caveat: bugs

[But Why Tho?](https://butwhytho.net/2026/10/planet-zoo-2-review-frontier-developments/) (**8/10**) reports clipping, camera lockups and input delay, and says it expects day-one and post-launch patches. That is the outlet's expectation, not a Frontier announcement. Destructoid notes rare stutters, and [TheGamer](https://www.thegamer.com/planet-zoo-2-review-animals-management/) (**80**) notes occasional bugs and clipping. None of the reviews we read calls the game broken.

## Japan and Latin America

**Japan** is empty. We found no Famitsu Cross Review and no other citeable Japanese review as of Wednesday morning, so we print no Japanese score.

**Latin America** is thin. In Brazil, [Pizza Fria](https://pizzafria.ig.com.br/analises/planet-zoo-2-review/) gave it **8.1** and called it a good management sim for builders, animal carers and players who enjoy watching the business side. In Mexico, [Atomix](https://atomix.vg/review-planet-zoo-2) recommends it to genre fans without a numeric score, and says the UI still takes patience on PS5. We found no review yet from IGN Latinoamérica or LevelUp. Elsewhere, [Checkpoint Gaming](https://checkpointgaming.net/reviews/2026/10/planet-zoo-2-review-the-keys-to-the-animal-kingdom/) (Australia, **90**) calls it one of the best management sims ever made.

## Verdict

*Planet Zoo 2* is for players who loved the first game, and for anyone who wants to build and care for a detailed zoo and doesn't mind learning a dense interface to do it. It's a weaker pick if you want a light animal-watching toy, a streamlined tycoon game, or a smooth controller experience on day one.

**8**: a clear recommendation for the animals and the sequel upgrades, with the micromanagement and launch-bug caveats. Whether the menus are the fun or the chore is your call. We did not play it. This review is free.

## Verdict: Planet Zoo 2

- Pro: Near-universal praise for the animals: models, behaviour and how distinct each species feels
- Pro: Aquariums, aviaries and Wildlife Reserves widen the sandbox, with building quality-of-life upgrades over the first game
- Pro: IGN says the economy is genuinely challenging, at $49.99 on Steam (US)
- Con: PC Gamer (60) calls the micromanagement fiddly and frustrating; console reviews call the gamepad UI fussy
- Con: Day-0 bugs: But Why Tho? reports clipping, camera lockups and input delay; Destructoid and TheGamer note stutters and clipping
- Con: Some fan-favourite animals from the first game are missing, and Japan has no review yet while LatAm is thin
- How we reviewed it: Consensus aggregation of named published critic scores and takes (US, EU, LatAm, AU) published 2026-10-13–14 and read 2026-10-14. Play Observatory did not play it. Japan: no Famitsu or other Japanese review located, so no Japanese score is printed. LatAm is thin: one scored outlet (Pizza Fria, Brazil, 8.1) and one unscored recommendation (Atomix, Mexico). Most scores are for PC; the PS5 and Xbox samples are too small for a firm console average. PC Gamer 60 is the low outlier, with Xbox Achievements 70% next. Day-0 bug reports are attributed to the outlets that made them. Aggregators (Metacritic, OpenCritic) read on 2026-10-14 at ~09:09 ART and used as context only.

## Questions and answers

**Did Play Observatory play Planet Zoo 2 for this review?**
No. This is a consensus review: we read named published reviews from the US, Europe, Latin America and Australia, used Metacritic and OpenCritic as context, and applied our own judgment criteria. We did not conduct a hands-on playtest.

**Why did PC Gamer score Planet Zoo 2 so much lower than other critics?**
PC Gamer's Rick Lane gave it 60. His review says the animals are superstars but don't quite make up for the fiddly, frustrating micromanagement. Most other critics praise the same animals and accept the dense management as part of the appeal.

**What is Famitsu's score for Planet Zoo 2?**
There isn't one. As of the morning of October 14 we found no Famitsu Cross Review and no other citeable Japanese review. We don't invent a score.

**Is Planet Zoo 2 good on PS5 and Xbox?**
The console sample is small. Push Square gave the PS5 version 9/10 and Metro 8/10, but both flag a fiddly learning curve, and Xbox Achievements gave 70% and called the console UI fussy. Metacritic had too few console reviews for a firm average when we read it.
