*Crusader Kings III: By God Alone* is out. Paradox Interactive released the expansion on **September 30, 2026**, on PC, alongside the free **1.20.0 “Crozier” update**, according to the studio's [Steam announcement](https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1158310/view/1845383656377574). Steam's US [listing](https://store.steampowered.com/app/4232900/) prices it at **$19.99**; Paradox says it is also part of *Crusader Kings III: Chapter V*. The announcement calls it the game's latest Core Expansion.

The useful way to read a Paradox launch is to ask which half you get without paying. Here the line is unusually clean. The structural change to how religion works is free. Sitting on the papal throne is not.

## What the $19.99 buys: clergy you can play

The paid changelog opens with the Christian Church, a shared Situation covering every Christian ruler of County tier or above. It moves through seven Chapters — Paradox names them Fragile Unity, Saeculum Obscurum, Conversion, Reform, Investiture Controversy, Crusade and Concord — and a Crisis Chapter can end in the Great Schism once Schism progress reaches its threshold. Simony, murdered prelates, antipopes and Ecumenical Councils are among the listed events that push it from one Chapter to the next.

On top of that sits the headline feature. “Theocratic and Ecclesiastical rulers are now playable,” the changelog says. There is a College of Cardinals that holds up to 70 Cardinals and exists in all three start dates, a Papabile Score that measures a Cardinal's standing in the next conclave, and interactions to raise that score with Piety or gold or to pressure a Cardinal's vote. A Christian Head of Faith can enact Papal Bulls. A new Pope chooses a regnal name. There is a constraint, too: “Theocracies can only declare religious wars.”

The expansion also adds an Ecclesiastical Government with its own church Treasury, and Clerical Titles and Clerical Regions — in Paradox's words, “the Church's own spheres of influence parallel to the secular one.”

## What every player gets: Rites

Under “Free Features,” the changelog adds Rites. A Rite is “a distinct tradition within a Faith, with its own Head of Rite, liturgy, Tenets, and map color,” and every existing faith branch and school is now one — Paradox's examples include Ambrosian, Mozarabic, Hanafi, Theravada and Rabbinism. A Rite that drifts far enough from its Faith's Mainline Rite counts as heresy; one that reaches maximum Divergence “immediately branches off as a new Faith.”

So the base game's religion map changes for everyone on update day, in every faith and not only the Christian ones. The expansion then builds its Church politics on top of that free layer.

## Mods, and what the post leaves out

The day-before [Dev Diary #8](https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1158310/view/1844751498234002) introduces a dedicated UGC Experience team that, Paradox says, has been working on moddability and has added features modders had requested for years. That is a statement about tools, not about compatibility: the diary does not promise that existing mods survive an update that restructures every faith in the game, and we would not assume they do.

Paradox's Steam announcement covers the PC release. It does not mention the console editions of *Crusader Kings III*, so we are not giving a console date. We have added *By God Alone* to the [Release Radar](https://playobservatory.com/radar/) as a September 30 PC launch and will update the entry if Paradox dates the consoles.
